Forbes have released their list of Hollywood’s Biggest Turkeys of 2016 which includes a film starring Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey. Ouch.
From Snowden to Grimsby, here are this year’s biggest flops – according to Forbes methodology which compares worldwide box office grosses with estimated production budgets.
1. Max Steel
The biggest movie flop of the year award goes Max Steel which returned just 42% of its $10m budget (£8m). Forbes’ writer Natalie Robehmed said: “In the case of Max Steel, it finished filming in 2014 but by the time it was released, garnered no press attention.
“There weren’t big name stars to draw viewers to it, which also hurt its chances. Combined with poor reviews, it flopped.”
2. Free State Of Jones
Matthew McConaughey’s Free State Of Jones made less than half of its production budget from the worldwide box office grosses. It cost an estimated $50m (£40m) to make and returned just $23.2m (£18.6).
3. Popstar: Never Stop Stopping
Andy Samberg’s mockumentary took 48% of its $20m (£16m) production budget although it was well received by critics – scoring 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.
4. Pride And Prejudice And Zombies
Remarkably, adding zombies to any movie doesn’t instantly make it better. This Pride and Prejudice with a twist spent $28m (£23m) and took in $16.4m (£13m) at the box office.
5. Ratchet & Clank
The film release of this sci-fi animated video game made just $11.8m at the worldwide box office, 59% of its budget.
6. Keeping Up With The Joneses
Hangover star Zach Galifianakis wasn’t enough to save the Joneses from the list of flops — the film made a 67% return on its $26.9m (£22m) budget.
7. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
This Tina Fey and Billy Bob Thornton war comedy-drama was rated highly on Roten Tomatoes with 68% but took just $24.9m (£20m) at the worldwide box office.
8. Grimsby
Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Brothers Grimsby, estimated to have a 35m dollar (£28m) budget, marked the worst return of the English actor and producers’ career at the box office, taking $28.7m (£23n).
9. Snowden
Ahead of its release in the UK next month the film has returned 86% of its 40m dollar (£32m) budget at the box office, according to the list.
10. Masterminds
Another appearance from Zach Galifianakis comes with Masterminds – a comedy based on the 1997 Loomis Fargo Robbery in North Carolina. The release was delayed for more than a year after the production company faced financial crisis. It made $22m (£18m) at the worldwide box office.
